The Community of Shenandoah, Iowa has a strong background in supporting its youth. The Wabash Arts Camp, Ivan and Caroline Wilson Aquatic Center, new tennis courts, excellent ball fields and parks, Wabash Trace Nature Trail, and new K-8 grade school building are all but a few examples of the "child friendly" environment that has been fostered by so many dedicated and committed citizens. But we felt we needed to go one step further! The Shenandoah area needed comprehensive daycare and preschool facilities to support and attract young families to our community.
In the beginning several churches in the area saw a need for childcare and opened Our House Development Center in 1969. The original idea was for each church to house the center for one year and then move it to another church. The Presbyterian Church basement was the first and only site until 2004!
Shenandoah takes great pride in the new state of the art childcare center, the Turnbull Child Development Center, which opened on October 4, 2004. The Turnbull Child Development Center is a non-profit organization that serves children in the Shenandoah and surrounding areas who are between the ages of 6 weeks and 12 years. While providing daycare to the younger children, Turnbull CDC offers preschool, pre-kindergarten, and a before and after school program.
With the development of our new facility, we are able to provide the same services in one building that were previously provided in three different agencies. Turnbull CDC is located on the Shenandoah School Campus, so we are able to walk our school age children to and from school each day. Turnbull CDC has a capacity for 182 children at one time and the number of students that we serve is growing each day!
With the tremendous support from our community and the dedication of the board and staff we are making an investment in our children, the future of Shenandoah. The Turnbull Child Development Center offers programs and care for families across the economic spectrum. At the Turnbull Child Development Center no child is left behind.
